SUMMER EXHIBITION 2017 - the largest art exhibition in the Netherlands

The Netherlands’ largest open Summer Exhibition of art will be held at Museum de Fundatie and Kasteel het Nijenhuis. Selection is open to all styles and tastes and will be anonymous. This year’s joint theme is ‘water’. The Water Summer Exhibition 2017 will open its doors on 24 May and run until the end of August. 250 works, in 2 or 3 dimensions, from one-off pieces to print editions, and from crafts to performance art, will be presented jointly at various locations.

Selected works of the summer exhibition will be combined with theme related pieces from the museum’s collection and exhibited in the 'Wolk’s' spaces; the cloud shaped extension to the museum in Zwolle. In and around the castle’s environs, the work on display will naturally react and address its environment, as well as the work of artists such as Jan Cremer, David Bade, Paul Citroen and Piet Mondrian.

The water theme has been inspired by the museum's location in the water rich areas of Overijssel Province. As a Hanseatic town, Zwolle will also be included the 37th International Hanseatic Days 2017 (15-18 June 2017), which will be held in nearby Kampen. The central theme of the Hanseatic Days is ‘Water Connects’. The programme surrounding the Summer Exhibition for both public and artists will link with the cultural history of this water region. The theme’s content challenges artists to make new work. Water forms an endless source of inspiration and association: reflection, transparency, waves, flow, cleansing, baptism, contemplation, droplets, light fall, colour effects, sound, clay, glass, water colours, paper making, installation, moisture, mist, ice, tears, rain, landscape, sea, lakes, floods, animals, plants, life – a never ending stream.

The preliminary rounds for the Water Summer Exhibition 2017 will take place during March and April 2017 in the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, ZIMIHC Theater Stefanus in Utrecht, Minerva Art Academy in Groningen, Loods6 in Amsterdam and Kasteel het Nijenhuis in Heino-Wijhe (artworks for outside).
