DIRK HANNEMA (1895-1984) - COLLECTOR, MUSEUM DIRECTOR AND CHATELAIN

Dirk Hannema (1895-1984) – Collector, Museum Director and Chatelain tells the remarkable story of Dirk Hannema, a passionate collector who was director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and founder of Museum de Fundatie. The exhibition features a selection of paintings, sculptures, furniture and other applied art objects purchased by Hannema, displayed as they were at the time when this castle was his home.

The range of art on display provides a glimpse of Hannema’s broad interests and his unique collection. Masterpieces of international standing, curiosities and exotic objects underline the exceptionally high standard and eclecticism of his collection, which effortlessly combines early Flemish, French and German religious sculpture with 17th-century works by Bernardo Strozzi, Jan Baptist Weenix and Jan Lievens, as well as work by 19th-century Romantics like J.M.W. Turner and Modernists like Piet Mondrian, Gino Severini, August Herbin and Bart van der Leck. The rooms in the castle all have the distinctive feel of a collector’s home. Dirk Hannema lived here from 1958 to his death in 1984.

One of the rooms contains an intriguing fake Vermeer group from the Museum de Fundatie collection, paintings that Hannema attributed to Johannes Vermeer, including Portrait of a Couple with Two Children by Jürgen Ovens (1623-1678). He believed the family portrait included likenesses of Vermeer himself, his wife Catharina Bolnes, and the artist’s studio reflected in a large glass sphere. In the vines beside the sphere Hannema believed he could discern the signature ‘J. Meer’.

A number of key works from Hannema’s collection are on display at Fundatie Zwolle or have been loaned to other museums. Reproductions of these works and texts with historical photographs of the castle and its occupant ensure that the exhibition nevertheless gives a complete impression of the life of collector, museum director and chatelain Dirk Hannema.
