FRITZ KLEMM - PAINTINGS AND WORKS ON PAPER

Fritz Klemm (1902-1990) is one of a number of artists whose lives coincided with a turbulent period in German history and who therefore became active only at a relatively advanced age: in Klemm’s case, when he was 46.

In dialogue with the principles of German and European modern art, especially in the 1950s, he created a unique oeuvre that cannot be classified under any of the major movements of the time (such as Zero, American Minimalism or Abstract Expressionism).

Fritz Klemm’s work is extraordinarily powerful, tranquil, and poetic in the way it dialogues with and relates to the objects and spaces in the artist’s world. The factors that make his work and artistic practice so unique are the synergy with his experience, his special, selective way of looking at the world, and his quest for the ideal balance.

Fritz Klemm, 'Painting Table with Self Portrait', tempera, gouache, pencil and paper collage on cardboard, 61 x 42.7 cm. Private collection.
