This Fundatie Collection of well over 11.000 objects is composed of a number of – mainly private – collections. The basis was laid by Dirk Hannema (1895-1984), an art expert and the initiator of the Hannema-de Stuers Foundation, the origin of Museum de Fundatie.

Down through the years, Hannema’s collection has blended with other collections, such as those of Mr and Mrs De Graaff-Bachiene, the artist Paul Citroen, the actor Henk van Ulsen, and the lung specialist Willem Hogervorst, for example. Museum de Fundatie’s international collection comprises historic, modern and contemporary art and applied art (glass, ceramics and furniture, in particular from the 17th, 19th and pre-war 20th centuries).

The Province of Overijssel’s art collection

Since 1993, Museum de Fundatie has managed the collection of modern and contemporary art of the Province of Overijssel. An important part of this is the ‘Citroen Collection’, compiled by artist and art collector Paul Citroen (1896-1983). The majority of this collection was acquired by the Province between 1975 and 1987. The ‘Citroen Collection’, which covers the time-span 1900-1965, includes works by Jacoba van Heemskerck, Charley Toorop, Herman Kruyder, Jan Sluyters, Carel Willink, Piet Ouborg, early works by Karel Appel, Jorn and Corneille and, obviously, works by Citroen himself. In the eighties, the Province’s policy in the acquisition of art was aimed at filling the gaps in the Citroen Collection, while also paying attention to the developments of the (Dutch) visual arts after 1965. In this period, the collection was extended with works by Armando, Guido Lippens, Thomas Rajlich, Hans Ebeling Koning, Jaap van den Ende, Nick Banks, Joep van Lieshout, Henk Visch and others. From 1993 onward, the acquisitions have been the responsibility of the Hannema–de Stuers Foundation.
