Fundatie Collection: REMIX

In 2024, the programme of Museum de Fundatie focuses on collection making. On the one hand, we will open up our collection to new perspectives, while on the other we will look for new connections and stories that have been embedded in our collection all along. We do not look at period or style, but rather at thematic coherence between different works. In this presentation, you will meet old friends and new loves from the collection.

Collections are created by the preferences of a specific time; changes in taste, appreciation for certain creators and social developments mean that a historically grown collection can lose relevance. Research can help shine a new light on familiar works of art, and new acquisitions add weight to specific motifs and themes. By enriching and broadening the collection with more perspectives, new stories emerge. In this way, the museum collection increasingly becomes a reflection of society.

The foundation for Museum de Fundatie's collection was laid by collector Dirk Hannema (1895-1984). Over time, his collection merged with other collections, such as those of the De Graaff-Bachiene couple, artist Paul Citroen, actor Henk van Ulsen and lung specialist Willem Hogervorst. Over the years, the collection has also been supplemented by acquisitions. The collection of Museum de Fundatie includes art and design from the late Middle Ages to the present, as well as photography. Since 1993, Museum de Fundatie also manages the collection of modern and contemporary art of the province of Overijssel. Together the collections comprise approximately 15,500 objects.

Kasteel het Nijenhuis in Heino / Wijhe, Museum de Fundatie's outdoor location, also houses an extensive presentation of the collection.
