ANNEKE WILBRINK - Lofoten

From 5 September 2020 to 1 February 2021 Museum de Fundatie will be showing recent work by Anneke Wilbrink (b. 1973). Her colourful paintings depict a transformed world that balances between science fiction and the hear and now. Metropolitan architecture goes hand in hand with unspoilt natural beauty.

In Anneke Wilbrink’s paintings it seems as if the world is in a particle accelerator. Futuristic landscapes are filled with skyscrapers, psychedelic flowers and trees are depicted against a background of blue skies and rockfaces. Her worlds feature recognisable elements, like Rotterdam’s Erasmus Bridge and the Nieuwe Toren in Kampen (where she attended art college), which then immediately dissolve into the rest of the visual spectacle.

Anneke Wilbrink was unmistakably inspired by the Italian futurists: speed, energy, strong linework and technology all crowd together in her compositions. She is a thoroughbred painter who, in every canvas, strives for a balance between material, composition and colour. This is pure, intense painting disguised as science fiction. Her work inspires us to see how beautiful the world is and how important it is to keep it that way. Wilbrink herself refers to her work as ‘a protest song […] but without preaching’. The dynamic landscapes are composed like collages: often full, overcrowded, just like daily life.

In 2006 Anneke Wilbrink won the Royal Dutch Award for Painting. Her first exhibition at Museum de Fundatie was at Nijenhuis Castle in 2010. ‘And now it’s high time we showed her recent work’, says Ralph Keuning, director of Museum de Fundatie. ‘For me, the fascination in Anneke Wilbrink’s work lies in all the things happening in it. I step inside her world, am part of it for a little while, and realise that where I am is in a painting. The exhibition follows on perfectly from the work of her contemporary Martin Kobe of Leipzig, which was displayed on these walls previously’.
