Cristina Flores Pescorán - Echoes of Ancestors

PLEASE NOTE: Kasteel het Nijenhuis will only be accessible via the stationsweg from Heino station/centre Heino in the coming weeks. The castle is not accessible from the Wechterholt.

In Echoes of Ancestors, Flores Pescorán depicts a magical family meal with her grandparents. Through an immersive selection of drawings, videos, poetry and textile installations, the exhibition invites the audience into a space that intertwines the past with the present through a dialogue between different generations of Flores Pescorán's family. ECHOES OF ANCESTORS is Cristina Flores Pescorán's first solo museum exhibition in the Netherlands. Following 16 years of her battle with skin cancer, Cristina embarked in a quest to reconnect with her heritage.

Echoes of Ancestors is a deeply personal journey that connects family heritage and history with traditions.

In the exhibition, Flores Pescorán depicts a magical family meal with her grandparents. In it, questions and experiences about migration, connection with the environment and her health come together. Flores Pescorán's presentation is inspired by ancient divination practices from the Mochica culture in northern Peru, dating from 200 to 850 AD, where she comes from. In the divination practices of the Mochica culture, plants and seeds play an important role. In this tapestry of remembrance and healing, Flores Pescorán incorporates Moche beans (pallares) and native cotton, and soursop (guanabana) leaves, all important cultural symbols in Mochica culture. Moche beans (pallares) are essential in northern Peruvian cuisine and are used in divination and healing rituals. Indigenous cotton, known as the finest and most durable, is called the Silk of South America or the White Gold of Peru. Originally from northern Peru, it is environmentally friendly and traditionally used for fabrics, rituals and folk medicine. Soursop, a fruit from northern South America, is known for its medicinal benefits and is often promoted as a potential cancer treatment.

healing cancer with cotton, dancing with soursop leaves and reading pallares at the table will all be part of this magical family meal.
