PAUL CITROEN & YOKE MATZE
In 1977, Dutch-born photographer Yoke Matze visited Paul Citroen in his Wassenaar studio. Citroen was working on a portrait of major German photographer Otto Umbehr (1902-1980), better known as ‘Umbo’. Umbehr was a friend of Citroen’s from the Bauhaus period. It was with him that Citroen had conducted his first photographic experiments.
De Fundatie has recently been able to acquire 18 pictures by Yoke Matze, who has been living and working in London for the past 35 years. Matze’s photo series is a splendid complement to the Netherlands’ largest Citroen collection (which includes the painting of Umbo). The photo series and portrait are displayed side by side in Kasteel het Nijenhuis.
