Pim Trooster - THE RENOVATION

Pim Trooster (b. 1954) is a postmodernist. He freely combines all kinds of art forms to create an entirely new eclectic visual idiom. There is no medium with which Trooster not familiar. His installation The Renovation will be on display at Museum de Fundatie. At the same time, new and old work by Trooster will be on show at Nijenhuis Castle, in an exhibition where the Zwolle-based artist responds to De Fundatie’s collection.

The Renovation
‘De Pierik’ is part of the Assendorp district of Zwolle. It was founded in the 1930s to house Dutch Railways workers. Pim Trooster has lived in this old neighbourhood, where some properties are owner-occupied but the vast majority are social housing, since 1995. The housing association that owns most of the properties started a major renovation project in 2018. All the doors and windows of every rental property have been replaced. The studio complex where Trooster works is right in the middle of the neighbourhood. Every day, on his way there, he witnessed the renovation project in progress, and began ‘nicking’ nice pieces of scrap wood from the containers on the street. Next to a container he also found three boxes full of old dolls and toy animals, lovingly collected but now discarded. Trooster was so touched that he showed the dolls to his 90-year-old mother. Full of excitement, she told him that these dolls had been the ‘Barbies of her childhood’ in the 1930s and 40s, when ‘De Pierik’ was built. Trooster made a series of poetic ensembles using the wood and the dolls, creating a new future for these discarded ‘treasures’. The series is called The Renovation, and it will be presented as an installation in one of the side galleries on the ground floor of Museum de Fundatie.Pim Trooster, Talented Youngster, 2019.

Each room in the castle will include one or two additional works by Trooster, ranging from drawings and sculptures, to paintings, sound sculptures, photographs, photocopies and a video wall.
