Ronald A. Westerhuis (b. 1971) creates vast stainless steel sculptures. ‘Size does not make a sculpture any better; but it does increase its impact.’

His love of stainless steel dates from the time when he was working on drilling rigs in the North Sea. It was there that he came to know and love the steel and weathered tubes that have since become the basis for his indestructible sculptures.

In 2011, he created ‘RAWSOME!’ – a sphere four metres in diameter with concave mirrored surfaces – in response to a joint commission from the Lowlands Festival and Museum de Fundatie. For World Expo 2015, he created a sculpture in collaboration with Daniel Libeskind; and he has since been asked to represent the Netherlands at World Expo 2020 in Dubai.

Westerhuis’s most recent piece of public art is the MH17 Monument in the memorial wood near Vijfhuizen, unveiled in 2017 in memory of the victims of the air disaster.

For the Size Does Matter exhibition, Ronald A. Westerhuis is creating ‘Stepping Stones’, an almost 10-metre-long sculpture to be installed in front of the museum on the Blijmarkt.
